The Best of Chile's Central Valley

The Best of Chile’s Central Valley

Chile may cover thousands of miles and at least seven different climates from top to bottom, but you don’t have to go far from any point to get a taste for its diversity. Within the aptly named Central Valley alone, the starkly contrasting elements of mountains, ocean, farmland, sprawling metropolis and historic urban charm all lay within a few hours’ journey of each other. In our Best of Chile’s Central Valley you get a taste of this amazing country on this week-long sampler of Santiago and its surroundings. Hike the Andes, get your feet wet in the Pacific and enjoy some of the best food and wine in the country along the way.

Day 01

Coast down the Pan-American Highway through the lush agricultural heartland of Chile’s Central Valley toward the idyllic Colchagua Valley. Check into the elegant NOI Blend Hotel and enjoy a leisurely evening getting acquainted with your new surroundings.

Day 02

Start the day with a 12-mile bike ride to the Neyen de Apalta Winery, which focuses all its production on one Bordeaux-style blend from 115 year-old Carménère vines. Pedal on to the family-run Viu Manent winery for a tasting, tour and mouthwatering lunch spread.

Day 03

Count the colorful mosaics scattered throughout the village of Lo Abarca in the San Antonio Valley, taste the terroir in the wines of award-winning Casa Marin and brush up on your Neruda trivia at his Isla Negra home.

Day 04

Climb back on the bike today to explore the Casablanca Valley, known for its fresh, crisp whites and cold-climate Pinot Noir. Pedal over to a tasting at Kingston Family Vineyards and continue on through the town of Casablanca to Loma Larga for a memorable afternoon of food and wine.

Day 05

Pay a visit to the historic port city of Valparaíso, a bohemian maze of colorful houses built up into the hills encircling a sparkling blue bay. After a ride up a steep, century-old “ascensor,” or elevator, and a fresh, homemade lunch at Espiritu Santo, head back toward the bustling capital city, Santiago.

Day 06

Venture out to Cajon del Maipo, a breathtaking natural retreat and outdoor adventure hub in Santiago’s backyard. Enjoy a few moments of solitude and a hike past sweeping vistas of mountain peaks and gorges before returning to Santiago for an evening of your own design.

Day 07

Visit Santiago’s main produce and fish markets to buy fresh ingredients for a tasty meal. Alongside your guide you will select the best products from our favorite vendors, only to head to a private home to prepare a simple but delicious Chilean meal using the fresh fish and produce we just selected. Rather than a formal cooking class with technical instruction, this is a collaborative effort to prepare a delicious meal and talk food and culture.
