The southern extreme of the large Rapel Valley, better known as Colchagua, is close enough to Santiago for a day trip, but far enough away to feel fully immersed in deep-rooted wine country. Covering an area highly celebrated for its ripe, juicy red wines, this valley offers up spectacular Cabernet Sauvignons, show-stealing Syrahs and Carménères and even a few knock-out Malbecs. Most well-established wineries feature sweeping views of the Andes but, in the last few years, vineyards have expanded beyond the Coastal mountains toward the Pacific in an effort to broaden their repertoires and experiment with cool-climate varieties.
Set off from Santiago down the Pan-American Highway, through the agriculturally rich heartland of Chile’s Central Valley. Once in Colchagua, stop at the Casa Silva winery for a tour and tasting.
Sit down for a gourmet lunch at family-run Viu Manent. Afterwards we’ll make the short drive to the famed Apalta sub-region where you’ll be able to admire the architectural beauty of Lapostolle’s production area and cellar. Return to Santiago or continue on to your next adventure.
