From the moment you arrive, you will be captivated by the stunning landscapes of Northern Patagonia with its vast old-growth forests, massive glaciers, fjords, wild rivers, clear lakes and waterfalls. On this trip, you will spend eight days hiking through the wilderness of the area and enjoying its incredible beauty. The gateway to Chile’s far south, with the Carretera Austral (Southern Highway) winding its way through the region, Aysén is the “last frontier” that remains very sparsely populated. This place attracts both adventurous travelers and those in search of solitude.
Fly from Santiago to the Balmaceda airport in the Aysén region of Patagonia. From here you will begin your epic journey down the Carretera Austral. Lodge Ardilla is just past the town of Cerro Castillo and the secluded lodge at which you’ll spend the night sits on the shore of Lago Ardillas.
Enjoy a day of hiking with outstanding landscape in Cerro Castillo, with an experienced trekking guide. Return to Lodge Ardilla where you will spend the night.
Today we will continue our drive south on the Carretera Austral. Arriving to Puerto Tranquilo we will visit the mesmerizing marble caves on General Carrera Lake.
Enjoy a full day of trekking in Valle Exploradores, where we will approach the northern Patagonia ice fields. (Option to go trekking on the glacier – conditions permitting.)
We drive deeper into Patagonia where the landscapes continue to inspire. Passing through Puerto Bertrand we continue South along the Baker River until it merges with the Nef in an impressive confluence. Here we turn west into Chile’s newest park, the Patagonia National Park, which is working to be the world’s first energy independent park.
